If your home was built before the 1930s and requires repointing. The chances are the mortar used to lay the brickwork walls and chimney breast are Lime mortar. 

If this is the case it is very important to repoint again in Lime mortar.

Repointing in modern Portland cement can lead to several damaging issues. One of the first would be internal damp. This if left can cause brick damage such as spalling. 

As the strong mix in modern cement will not allow water to pass through the mortar joints.

Poor mortar joints and pointing between brickwork is one of the biggest causes of penetrating damp. If the wall is not repaired by a specialist as well as damp issues this can then lead to structural issues.
